Temporary Nanny Payroll

PAYE And Tax Support For Short-Term, Holiday Cover And Maternity Cover Nannies

Hiring a nanny for the school holidays, to cover your regular nanny's leave, or for a few months while you find someone permanent? A short contract is still employment, which means PAYE, tax, National Insurance and holiday pay apply from the first day. We handle the payroll side of temporary nanny arrangements so a short-term hire doesn't turn into a long-term headache. Annual fee from £260, and if you're already registered with us, a temp covering leave costs no extra.

5 Steps To Set Up A Temporary Nanny

Never employed a temp before? Here's what every family needs to work through, whether the job lasts three weeks or three months.

Step 1

Agree Dates, Hours And Gross Pay

Settle the start and end dates (or expected length), weekly hours and a gross rate. We'll help you check it against the National Minimum Wage.

Step 2

Put A Short-Term Contract In Place

A written contract covering dates, duties, hours and pay protects you both. A free standard employment contract is included with our service.

Step 3

Collect Your Temp's Details

Ask for their National Insurance number, date of birth, address and a P45 or completed starter checklist so the right tax code is used from day one.

Step 4

Add Them To Payroll

Already registered with us? We add your temp to your existing payroll at no extra charge. New to us? We'll set you up as an employer first.

Step 5

Final Pay When The Job Ends

We calculate the final payslip, including any holiday built up but not taken, and issue a P45 so your temp's next employer starts with the right tax code.

Does A Temporary Nanny Need To Be On Payroll?

If you pay someone to look after your children in your home and direct how they do it, they are almost certainly an employee, even if the job only lasts a few weeks.

Use the pay calculator

Families sometimes assume that a short contract, or a nanny who also works for other families, means the nanny can be self-employed or paid cash in hand. HMRC doesn’t see it that way. The usual test is whether the person works in your home, to your instructions, rather than running an independent business of their own.

That means registering as an employer, deducting income tax and National Insurance where earnings are above the thresholds, and keeping payroll records. If your temp earns very little, different rules can apply, so it’s worth checking rather than guessing. We’ll tell you where your arrangement sits.

For the background, read why your nanny can’t be self-employed.

Agree Your Temp's Pay As A Gross Figure

Register Now

The rule that applies to permanent nannies applies to temps too: agree the pay in gross terms, not net.

With a short contract it is tempting to promise a take-home figure. But a new starter’s tax code may not be what you expect, and if the pay was agreed net, any extra tax or National Insurance that follows falls on you as the employer. Use our free nanny gross to net calculator to see what a gross rate means in take-home terms.

Holiday Pay On A Short Contract

Register Now

Temporary nannies build up paid holiday from their first day, just like permanent staff. Because a short contract rarely leaves time to take it as leave, it is usually paid out in the final payslip.

We work out what’s owed when the contract ends. For more on how entitlement works, see our guide to nannies and holidays.

What You're Responsible For When You Hire A Temp

A temporary contract brings the same legal duties as a permanent one. Here’s what we help with.

Registering With HMRC

If you aren’t already registered as an employer, you need to be before your temp’s first payday. We do this for you as part of setup.

PAYE Deductions And Reporting

Each time you pay, the right income tax and employee National Insurance must be deducted and reported to HMRC. We handle this and tell you exactly what to pay and when.

National Minimum Wage Compliance

We check the rate you’ve agreed against the current National Minimum Wage bands for your temp’s age, so short-term never means underpaid.

Pension Auto-Enrolment

Where your temp is eligible, auto-enrolment can apply even on a short contract. We’ll tell you if and when it does.

Choosing A Temporary Nanny Payroll Provider

Many payroll services are built around one permanent nanny and make short-term hires awkward. Check that whoever you choose can add and remove staff easily, and will produce a final payslip and P45 when the job ends.

Our annual subscription starts from £260 and covers monthly payroll for the year, with no hidden charges if you add a temp to cover leave.
