What’s The Difference Between Gross And Net?
Gross pay is the salary before any deductions; net pay is what actually lands in your nanny’s bank account after Income Tax, National Insurance, and any pension contribution have come out. The two numbers can be surprisingly far apart, often 15-20% for a typical nanny salary, which is exactly why so many pay disagreements start with a misunderstanding about which figure was actually being discussed.
Why Gross Vs Net Catches Families Out
It’s common for a nanny to quote a rate she wants “in her pocket”, and for a parent to agree without realising that’s a net figure. If you agree in net terms, you as the employer take on the risk of whatever tax and National Insurance turns out to be on top, and your nanny misses out if her tax code changes or she’s entitled to a refund. Agreeing a gross figure protects both sides and is the approach every payroll provider, including HMRC, actually works from. If you’re still working out what to offer, use this calculator to convert whichever figure you’ve been quoted into the other, so you know exactly what you’re agreeing to before it’s in writing.
How To Use This Calculator
Enter a gross annual or monthly salary to see the net take-home figure, or enter the net amount your nanny wants to receive to see what gross salary that requires. Add a tax code if you know it; if not, the standard 1257L is a safe starting point for most nannies in their main job. The calculator updates instantly, so it’s easy to test a few different figures before you settle on an offer.
