Work out exactly what a part time nanny will cost you

Most parents shop around for nannies thinking about the hourly rate. The real number is bigger. Once you add up tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, and holiday pay, the cost of employing a part time nanny can easily be 20 to 25 percent more than the headline wage. That can be a nasty surprise if you haven’t planned for it.

Our part time nanny salary calculator does the maths for you in seconds. Just enter the hours you need, the hourly or weekly rate, and your nanny’s tax code, and you’ll see a clear breakdown of what you’ll actually pay each month and each year as the employer.

What the calculator works out

The tool calculates the full picture, not just the wage. You’ll see the gross pay your nanny earns, the income tax and employee National Insurance that’s deducted from her or his pay, the net amount they take home, your employer’s National Insurance contribution, the workplace pension contribution you’re legally required to make if your nanny is eligible, and the total all in cost to you as the employer.

If you’ve ever been quoted a net rate by a nanny and wondered how that translates into your real outgoing, this is the tool that answers it.

Gross vs net, made simple

One of the most common mistakes parents make is agreeing wages in net terms (the amount the nanny takes home) rather than gross terms (the amount before tax). HMRC always works in gross figures, and so do payroll providers. If you agree a net rate without thinking it through, you could end up paying significantly more than expected, especially if the nanny’s tax code changes.

This calculator lets you flip between gross and net so you can see both sides clearly. If you’re still in discussions with a nanny, run the numbers both ways before you commit to anything in writing.

How to use it

Enter the number of hours per week, the agreed pay rate (gross or net), and the nanny’s tax code if you know it. If you don’t know the tax code yet, the standard 1257L code is usually a safe starting point for most employees. The calculator will show you the full breakdown instantly. Adjust the numbers as much as you like, the results update straight away.

Once you’ve got a number that works, screenshot it or write it down so you can refer back when you’re putting together a budget or drafting a contract. If you’d like a hand making sense of the numbers or working out what’s realistic for your area, get in touch and we’ll talk it through with you.
